Why Upright Bass Lessons at Canton Music Academy?

Some schools group the upright bass in with other string instruments. We don’t, because it deserves its own spotlight. Your instructor isn’t a generalist; they’re a dedicated, university-trained upright bassist who is both technically trained and performance-proven.

In tailored one-on-one lessons, you’ll learn what matters to you, whether that’s bowing technique for orchestral work, pizzicato for jazz ensembles, or playing your favorite pop tunes.

What You’ll Learn

🎻 Classical

Bowing, intonation, orchestral repertoire and sight-reading.

🎷 Jazz

Walking bass lines, improvisation, scales and modes.

🎸 Pop & contemporary

Rhythm section work, plucking techniques and playing with a band.

📖 Reading music

Not required to start. You’ll learn to read and understand music as you go.

Who It’s For

Because of the upright bass’s size, most students begin around middle school age or later, and it’s never too late to start. Our students include:

  • Teen jazz band and school orchestra members
  • Classical music hopefuls preparing for auditions
  • Bass guitarists crossing over to upright
  • Adults pursuing a long-held musical dream

Lesson Format

Upright bass lessons are private: just you and your instructor. That focused time leads to fast, personalized growth. Lessons are available in 30, 45 and 60-minute lengths, with in-person and online options. Not sure which length is right? See 30, 45 or 60-minute lessons?

Do I Need My Own Bass?

Yes, but we’ll help. We don’t rent instruments directly, but we’ll gladly point you to trusted local bass shops and rental providers. Some offer student sizes for younger players, rent-to-own programs, and maintenance and tuning services. Already have a bass? Great. Bring it in and we’ll get started.

Lesson Pricing and Scheduling

We offer lesson package discounts to make long-term learning affordable for families and committed students, with no hidden registration fees, monthly or pay-as-you-go options, and discounts for siblings and multi-instrument families.

Performance Opportunities

Our students don’t just practice; they perform. Our student recitals are a chance to build stage confidence, set and reach performance goals, and celebrate progress with family and friends. Some students go on to join school ensembles, local orchestras or their own bands.
