Songwriting Lessons in Canton, MI
Have a melody stuck in your head, a notebook full of lyrics, or just a feeling you want to turn into a song? Our private songwriting lessons in Canton help you shape rough ideas into finished songs, one-on-one with an instructor experienced in songwriting, recording and music education.
What You’ll Work On
Songwriting means different things to different people. Some writers start with words, others with a chord progression or a hook. Every lesson is built around your ideas, and can include:
Finding your subject, imagery, rhyme schemes and phrasing that sounds natural when sung.
Writing hooks people remember and fitting melodies to your words.
Choosing progressions that support the mood, with the theory to understand why they work.
Verses, choruses, bridges and pre-choruses, and how to build energy across a song.
Techniques for getting past writer’s block and turning fragments into complete songs.
Capturing ideas with voice memos or simple recording tools, and preparing songs to perform.
Who Songwriting Lessons Are For
You don’t need to sing well or play an instrument to start. If you have ideas, we’ll help you shape them. Our students include:
- Beginners with ideas but no training
- Singers writing their own material
- Guitarists and pianists writing full songs
- Bands and aspiring recording artists
- Kids and teens who love to create
- Anyone who wants to express themselves through music
Some students arrive with finished songs and want feedback. Others bring a single line or a melody they’ve been humming. Both are welcome.

- Write between lessonsYou’ll leave each lesson with a clear next step: finish a verse, try a new chord progression, rewrite a chorus.
- Finish, record and performAs songs come together, you’ll record simple demos, and you can share your work at our student recitals if you’d like.
What to Bring
A notebook or tablet for lyrics, your instrument if you play one (guitar, keyboard, ukulele), a phone for recording ideas, and your imagination. Lessons are relaxed and judgment-free.
Try our free Chord Progression Builder. Pick a key, build a progression with diatonic, borrowed and secondary dominant chords, hear it, and print a chart with chord diagrams for guitar, ukulele or piano. It’s a great way to sketch the chords for a new song.

Songwriting Lesson FAQ
Do I need to sing or play an instrument?
No. Many great songwriters started with only lyrics or melodies in their head. Your teacher can help with the musical side, and many students add voice, guitar or piano lessons later.
What age can my child start songwriting lessons?
We teach songwriting from age 7 through adult. Younger students often start with fun lyric games and simple melodies, while teens and adults dive into structure, harmony and recording.
How long are the lessons?
Private lessons are 30, 45 or 60 minutes once a week. Beginners and younger students usually start with 30 minutes; writers working on full songs or recording often prefer 45 or 60.
Do I need to know music theory?
No. You’ll pick up the theory you need as you go, like how chords work together and why a chorus feels like a lift. It’s always taught in the context of your own songs.
Who owns the songs I write?
You do. Your teacher guides and gives feedback, but the songs are yours.
